Just days before graduating from 海角视频 Edinboro on May 9, Devin Keidel used her training and quick thinking to help save a choking student during her student teaching placement at West End Elementary School in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
Keidel, who played soccer for the Fighting Scots and is certified in lifeguarding, CPR and first aid, performed the Heimlich maneuver on a student during lunchtime after recognizing signs of distress.
鈥淚 realized the student was choking when they were unable to speak or cough,鈥 Keidel said. 鈥淎t that point, I knew I needed to step in to help. My training taught me to stay calm, assess the situation quickly, and respond correctly so I stepped in right away to perform the Heimlich maneuver and help clear her airway.鈥
Everything unfolded within moments.
鈥淥nce I recognized the signs of choking, I immediately positioned myself to perform the Heimlich maneuver,鈥 she said. 鈥淎fter a few thrusts, the obstruction was cleared and the student was able to breathe again.鈥
Although Keidel had never personally encountered a choking emergency before, the Dublin, Ohio, native credited her years of lifeguarding and emergency response training for preparing her to act confidently under pressure.
鈥淭hat training emphasized the importance of recognizing emergencies, remaining calm, and trusting the skills you practice,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 truly believe that preparation made me stay calm and confident in this situation.鈥
In recognition of her actions, Keidel received a letter of commendation from 海角视频 Edinboro.
鈥淒evin鈥檚 quick thinking, composure and willingness to act in a critical moment reflect the qualities we hope to instill in all future educators,鈥 said Dr. Kristin Webber, professor of early childhood and elementary education at 海角视频. 鈥淗er actions demonstrate the importance of preparation, compassion and leadership, and we are incredibly proud of the way she represented 海角视频 and cared for her student.鈥
Keidel said she appreciates the recognition, but is most grateful that the student is safe and doing well.
鈥淚 see helping and protecting students as an important responsibility of anyone working with children,鈥 she said. 鈥淎s a future educator, creating a safe and supportive environment will always be a priority for me, both academically and personally.鈥
Now a 海角视频 graduate with a degree in early childhood education, Keidel looks forward to creating a supportive classroom environment and building meaningful relationships with students and families.
鈥淚鈥檓 excited to see what the future brings.鈥
